Finding Your Inspiration

For generations inspiration has been the driving force for creation. Writers finding their inspiration can instantly open the doorway to better understanding and answers we are all seeking.

The writing life is not just laying down your thoughts on paper for all the world to see and sharing information. For writing is about communication, about an idea, about a thought, about a thing, about the human condition, reconnecting the past, communicating the present, and expressing the future. We are talking about words that have the power to inspire us as human beings. The writing process is full of wonder and discovery.

If you’re an avid reader and writer, than you’re a constant thinker who must seek out the known and unknown and investigate whatever the subject might be and share this information with all your fellow human beings in a way that they can understand it and enjoy reading it. Combine this with the need to have a voice and the desire to invoke a feeling, mood, an emotion to your readers and listeners. This can translate into artists who work with pigment and paint, musicians who work with musical instruments. A writer writes. An artist paints. A singer sings.

Claude Monet, The Artist’s Garden at Giverny, 1900

These communicators among us are great at finding an infinite amount of inspiration everyday. Inspiration can happen anytime, late at night, in the daytime, while you are on vacation, while you are working, when you are alone or with friends, when you are silently thinking and meditating, even while you are watching TV or reading a book or magazine. Taking walks amongst nature, looking at a sunset, looking at the ocean, mountains, trees, and the sky, all of that surrounds us can be a wealth of inspiration.

Finding your inspiration in life is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself. When you feel consumed by inspiration, you get a burst of creativity that can translate into artistic, musical, and literary endeavor. Inspiration for some can seem to be divine or mystical in nature. Many people find inspiration in faith and God. Others can inspire you, by those who are living and those who have departed this earth. This could be your grandparents or your parents or great thinkers and writers of our time like Mahatma Gandhi, Aristotle, Jesus, Lao Tzu, Mohammed, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Tony Robbins, and Deepak Chopra.

Great figures from history dating back over thousands of years can inspire us. Great men and women from our own time can inspire us today. Inspiration comes from all over world and from many different countries and culture. People inspire other people. These great thinkers and communicators of our time help to manifest the driving emotion we need to feel confident, secure, and give a sense of unity. Instilling in us the desire to do great things too and give a needed direction to see a personal goal fulfilled.

To achieve the maximum benefits of the different forms and concepts of inspiration one really needs to be a good listener. A listener who can hit the pause button of their mind for just a moment long enough to absorb the information. A listener who can take a step back and ponder what is in front of him or her. To let inspiration come one needs to do away with the selfishness and embrace selflessness. To understand that every person and everything that is alive is a form of inspiration. Inspiration is part of our natural history and is so important that people long ago have left many forms of inspiration for us to receive and enjoy and ultimately to be inspired with. To be a silent observer of the beauty of inspiration is to be in the joy of it.

Great works of art from artists thousands of years ago still inspire us today. Artist like Rembrandt van Rijn, Ivan Aivazousky, Vincent van Gogh, and Picasso. Here are two interesting quotes Picasso had said. “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” -- Picasso. . In addition, "The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web.” -- Picasso. Inspiration comes from our soul, our hearts, and the world around us.

Great works of literature covering all subject matters are in tomes, sages, and in countless books all over the world. Music from the masters of ancient time is full of inspiration and from today’s modern music. Gifted young writers from today and poets from age’s long past, and lyrical geniuses of the musical world, all inspire us today. All these great works of inspiration are at our fingertips every day.

Inspiration is all around us. Inspiration comes from the source of life. Without inspiration, the world would probably slowly stop and cease to move. Hope, love, romance, aspirations, dreams, and desires. All have a start in inspiration. Master the path to inspiration and you start to master the path to your own creations. Finding inspiration also, means keeping an open mind and letting the spark of creativity overwhelm you. Be a listener, a dreamer, a communicator, an observer of life, and understand that everything has a purpose. Be inspired in everything that you do. Others will notice your efforts of inspiration and they will be encouraged to do the same. Inspiration is an infectious gift’s worth its weight in gold. So go ahead and inspire someone today. It is free and bountiful.

Hero

Heroes in mythology are seeking the same experience that we in the modern world are seeking. We’re not so much seeking the meaning of life as we are seeking what it is like to be truly alive with a purpose that resonates throughout our entire being and reality.

“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”

Joseph Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987), American author and mythologists, has revealed that the hero’s journey is a quest for knowledge and achieving a desired goal. This undoubtedly will test the hero with peril and bold deeds. A good example of this is George Lucas’s Star Wars films concerning the adventures of Luke Skywalker in which the hero’s journey is not so much a courageous endeavor but more as a life lived in self-discovery, “and Luke Skywalker was never more rational than when he found within himself the resources of character to meet his destiny.” – Joseph Campbell.

Life is full of choices. That’s what free will is all about. We mustn’t blame God for mistakes or our own frailty. We are the creators of our own destiny. Campbell mentioned the Indian belief of Karma in which he said, “Your life is the fruit of your own doing. You have no one to blame but yourself.”

Some would say that chance controls destiny. The chance that your parents even met from amongst millions of people and then fell in love is incredible. The chance that you were even born is a miracle. The chance that you might be killed in a terrible war or killed accidentally in an accident can happen without your control. Campbell said, “The problem is not to blame or explain but to handle the life that arises.” Follow your heart and not the bureaucratic imposed system you are living in. Do not let the masses dictate how you should think and what you should do. Have independent thought and hold onto your ideals true to yourself. Keep your humanity and be a person of heart and live free to the fullest.

What happens when you forget your humanity?

The Star Wars films are not so much a morality play as they are a modern mythological tale. Often the hero’s own identity is shrouded in mystery and he may possess special powers that no other person has. As was the case of Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker who began life as a hero and later a notorious dark figure.

A once proud and heroic Jedi Knight of the Old Republic, Anakin began his life as a hero we all know from classic literature, undertaking an arduous journey full of adventure and facing challenging, and supernatural obstacles. For the quest of the hero is he who follows a singular path that may lead him to the far corners of the world, perhaps the underworld or to a magical world in search of his identity, his love, his purpose, and ultimately his destiny. But tragically given the gift of absolute power Anakin gives up his humanity of selflessness and instead uses his power for selfishness. He falls from grace, and ultimately becomes the evil Dark Lord of the Sith, known as Darth Vader, and becomes one of the main architects of the imposed system.

Joseph Campbell has shown that these mythological stories generally end with the hero gaining new knowledge or abilities, as well as wisdom and maturity. The purpose of a hero must endure great hardships and face whatever opposition arises. The hero must rely upon his wits and inner strength to combat demons and enemies. Some heroes are endowed with extreme luck, and protected by magic or a shielding deity. But ultimately, heroes are just people like you and me. They are on a journey of self-discovery and self understanding. Their symbolic journeys and adventures form the basis for many myths and legends that we know of today and are filled with great lessons to be learned that transcends all ages and time.

How does mythology help the average person?

The power of myth, rituals, religion, our belief system, tradition, society, literature, the pursuit of God, love, living life, and the meaning of death, all invoked the meaning of the world around us and our attempt to understand and harmonize our lives with our state of reality. You enter into the world, not knowing who you are, and what you’re capable of. Understanding how we fit into the universe is a desire and goal we all have as human beings.

Campbell has stated that the power of myth opens the doorway of discovery to the mysteries and wonder of the actual world around us. Understanding how the universe works isn’t easy and even science can’t tell us how everything works. Mythology can help with validating sociological concepts and help us to understand them. The laws of life demonstrating morality and ethical laws that has been practiced and maintain in a good society for thousands of years. Most importantly, mythology helps us to understand life under any circumstances. A good example of understanding this concept is in Campbell’s book, Pathways to Bliss: Mythology and Personal Transformation. Campbell mentions in the book that not only literature, but even great works of art can demonstrate the message clearly. “Artists are magical helpers. Evoking symbols and motives that connect us to our deeper selves, they can help us along the heroic journey of our own lives.”

Heroes are born every day and from every walk of life. Unlike heroes from mythology, modern-day heroes are not immortal beings, nor are they all powerful. Instead, they are representatives of all the best qualities that human beings have, such as courage, ingenuity, strength, wisdom, compassion, and love. An average person may not think that they’re able to make a difference in the world. But all it takes is one or two, to stand up and do what’s right, to say what’s right, and to act on that and make it right. That act alone takes courage and something that we find in ourselves to make it come through and manifest our true nature, which is to be in harmony with the universe to be in harmony with each other to be in harmony with ourselves.

Legends of heroes show us just how great we could be. For if you’re going to aspire to be somebody, anybody, than a hero is a great start, one who ventures forward into the unknown searching for the truth, happiness, and boldly staying true to oneself. Everyday heroes are in search of wonder, peace, Nirvana, and illumination. Heroes like Jesus and Buddha and Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr and everyday heroes, philosophers, doctors, singers, writers, artists, our parents, our teachers, our children, and ultimately ourselves. A place to find is within you. Follow your bliss and be the guiding light to others.

Dr. Who

Some of the greatest heroes in mythology and literature are those that can never die. They are legendary, all-powerful, immortal, and solitary beings, true heroes in every sense of the word. They represent the best of our qualities, like courage, devotion, great strength, cleverness, and wisdom.

Perhaps the most famous immortal and time traveler of all in modern literature and on TV would have to be none other than Dr. Who. For nearly 50 years Dr. Who is a British science fiction television program produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The program originally aired in 1963 starring William Hartnell and continued on with other actors portraying the Doctor to 1989. The show was revived in 1996 as a television film starring Paul McGann, and later relaunched in 2005 and has continued on to this day.

Known simply as the Doctor he is able to travel through time and space inside his TARDIS (an acronym for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) machine that resembles a blue 1950s British police box. Many of the Doctor’s traveling companions have observed that the inside of the TARDIS is larger than the outside. The Doctor operates a Type 40 TARDIS which functions by block transfer equations (Distributed Cluster Algebra) necessary to create a Space-Time Event connected to the Eye of Harmony. Only the Time Lords are able to create a TARDIS, and surprisingly enough, they are not built but rather grown and are quite sentient. The workings of the TARDIS can easily be explained using modern mathematics and Four Dimensional Engineering.

Dr. Who is humanoid, eccentric, clever, heroic, and virtually immortal, and estimated to be over 900 years old. (Methuselah in the Old Testament of the Bible, grandfather of Noah who built the “Ark” is said to have lived to be 969 years of age.) The Doctor claims to be an alien who can regenerate his body at least a dozen times whenever his body is fatally damaged. Unbeknownst to his traveling companions the Doctor has reincarnated into a new body several times already throughout his life with most of his memory intact. With each new regeneration that occurs the Doctor’s characteristics change and develop into a new personality that is similar and yet different from the one before.

The Doctor travels through space and time in and out of history and future-history, fighting injustice and battling an assortment of foes. In one particular storyline Doctor Who is said to have been the incarnation of Merlin in another timeline. The same mysterious magician Merlin, who had incredible knowledge, was the master of time, and thought to be immortal. The Doctor reluctantly acknowledges that it could indeed be him from the far future traveled back to ancient times to aid King Arthur and his plight.

The Doctor comes from a race of Time Lords whose civilization and technology has made them masters at manipulating time and space. It is said that Time Lords can live “practically forever” barring accidents, and that in some extreme cases, they will use the elixir of life. When regeneration is not possible, using the elixir of life will grant them a chance to live longer yet again.

Time Lords were legendary throughout the entire galaxy and known to be godlike beings who could master time and space. Dr. Who is known to have two passions in life: One is his freedom and the other is his fascination with the planet Earth. His love for humans is well known and he will protect them even at the cost of his own life. Much like the mythological hero Gilgamesh, the one who has never tasted death…..the Doctor is a hero who strides through the centuries….ultimately alone.”

Dr. Who is undoubtedly a hero and has been played on BBC TV by 10 gifted actors already since 1963. Dr. Who gained fame in the United States in the 1970s, when Dr. Who was portrayed by the very popular Tom Baker. His portrayal of the Doctor has been the longest and the most eccentric version of the Doctor’s characteristics. Currently the Doctor can be seen on cable stations across America and in other countries around the world. The tenth incarnation of the Doctor was recently played by David Tennant who has successfully passed the role to Matt Smith in 2010 as the eleventh Doctor.

Magician

Obtaining immortality and demonstrating any form of advanced technology would seem to a lesser civilization as to be magical in nature. Godlike beings and heroes of mythology possessed great knowledge and wisdom, rewarding them with magical abilities to live forever. May have had help in achieving these supernatural feats.

In ancient mythology, the pursuit for immortality has led some to the “elixir of immortality” with the promise of eternal youth. Known today as the elixir of life, a renowned potion, often associated with the philosopher’s stone is said to grant the drinker eternal life. Alchemists from all over the world from India, China, Persia and Europe have pursued this potion to obtain long life. Legend tells us that mythological figures like Hermes, Enoch, and the Egyptian deity Thoth all drank from the elixir of life.

The effects of this elixir and in the creation of it seem to have magical overtones throughout history. The use of magic in ritualistic practices to produce conscious manipulation, and almost seemingly impossible feats, would have some believes that it’s merely an illusion. But there seems to be a thin line between sorcery and alchemy, which seems to use purely natural means to create something real. The concept of the elixir of life is very similar to the Fountain of Youth, a legendary spring that restores youth and vitality. When Spanish conquistadors like Juan Ponce de Leon who came to America in the 16th century they were looking for the Fountain of Youth and gold. But legendary folklore claims 300 years before a talented alchemist may have solved both problems.

The creation of the philosophers’ stone is said to have the power to turn lead into gold and some believe it can be used as the elixir of life. For once drinking the elixir to rejuvenate and heal the body, and ultimately achieve immortality. Nicolas Flamel (1330-1418) was a French alchemist born on September 28, 1330 and is allegedly the creator of the philosopher’s stone. Flamel’s reputation as an accomplish alchemist of his time is unsurpassed. When Nicolas Flamel discovered the book of Abraham it is said that he discovered application to help him create the philosopher’s stone.

Legend states that tomb robbers found Nicolas Flamel’s grave to be empty upon opening it a few years after his recorded death. Adding to the mystery that maybe he actually was successful in creating the elixir of life and used it on himself. Some believe that he could still be alive, even today, almost 700 years old, immortal, and living in secret. The story of the philosophers’ stone is widely used in literature today and remains a mystery.

J.K. Rowling’s book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, 1997, released in the United States in 2001 as a highly successful fantasy-adventure film as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The book concerns Harry Potter’s effort to stop the evil magician Lord Voldemort from seeking the stone created by Nicolas Flamel so that he can use it and achieved immortality. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series is rich in fantasy and myth; and covering the theme of immortality and death.

Michael Scott is an Irish author born in Dublin on September 28, 1959. Scott has written over 100 books and has started a successful series covering folklore, romance, and fantasy books involving the immortal French alchemist, Nicholas Flamel. Scott’s book The Alchemyst, The Magician, The Sorceress, and Necromancer are about how Nicolas Flamel and his wife become the guardians of the book of Abraham. From ancient knowledge found within the book of Abraham and combined with Nicholas Flamel’s alchemy skill he has produced the philosopher’s stone and granted him and his wife immortality.

The desire and the pursuit of immortality is an old and ancient one that many have tried through the centuries of time. The ultimate goal for clearly selfish reasons to cheat death and retain one’s youthfulness is a path for the faint hearted. But let us not forget Irish poet and writer Oscar Wilde‘s novel entitled The Picture of Dorian Gray published in 1890 is considered a classic work of gothic horror fiction about a man obsessed with his own beauty and longevity. Dorian Gray sells his soul to retain his life and beauty, and places all his sin and acts of debauchery into his self-portrait which becomes disfigured and ages into a horrible portrait of himself.

The price for immortality can be a costly one. Alchemists have tried to create it. Magicians and conjurers have tried to master it. Conquerors and armies have searched the world for it. But what if technology was so advanced that it could actually stop death? Modern science today is slowly catching up to the benefits of the fountain of youth. Prolonging life with better medicine and artificial organs is just one step away to becoming almost immortal. What would happen if we could master time and space, and become immortal beings ourselves? Would we become gods? Would we become heroes? Or would we become villains?
